Executive Director Starts Work

Leo J. Deveau, the new CCN Executive Director, started
work this week, familiarizing himself with the
Chebucto organization and its place in the growing NS online
community.

The newly created Executive Director position is designed
to help bridge the gap between the Chebucto Community Net
with its many and varied volunteer and technical
resources and the opportunities
becoming available as government agencies and other groups
develop their online assets.

A graduate of both Acadia and Dalhousie Universities, Leo J.
Deveau brings an impressive array of skills to bear
on the many challenges facing Chebucto and his high energy
hands-on approach should help raise Chebucto's profile in the
community.

Work begins on Provincial Server

Work begins this week on the new Provincial Server
designed to provide email and web services to communities
in outlying regions of the province. CCN-Tech
Committee members have been practicing the setup and
configuration of the many files that go into making up
a community network on a development machine in preparation
for the arrival of the as-yet unnamed machine later in the week.

Chebucto Plus keeps adding users

The graphical access Chebucto Plus
service has been proving to be a hit with CCN users. For a Sustaining membership
in the Chebucto Community Net Society of $100 per year, users currently get
unlimited hours per month and session times that extend
past a guaranteed time so long as modems are available for others to
dial in on. In addition to the graphical access, users also get 10 Megs
of file space on the Chebucto server, the choice of a custom user name
and four different ways of accessing their email.

The Chebucto Plus service is available to anyone with
a Chebucto account. You can register and get your own Chebucto account
here
if you do not have one.

Old CCN Domain Names Expire!

The old CCN domain names
ccn·cs·dal·ca and
cfn·cs·dal·ca are
being officially retired at the request of our upstream service provider,
the Network Operations Centre at Dalhousie University.
All links and bookmarks to pages and addresses on CCN using these names will
soon no longer work. Changing these links and addresses to
chebucto.ns.ca now will
ensure trouble-free continuing access to them.

Work continues on the purging of all references to these outdated addresses
from CCN files and documents including User Profiles. Some
Chebucto users may be experiencing slower logins as their
file directories, addressbooks and web pages are checked for
the now outdated domain names when they login. The search is
a one time event though users did have to go through the process
a second time after the holidays when a log file was accidentally
deleted. Users are urged to remove any references to the old domain names
and may choose to
automate this process
if they wish.
