Policy Committee Report
Chebucto Community Net Society
Annual General Meeting 2005
The role of the Policy Committee is two-fold:
- to address policy development and implementation issues; and
- to address complaints or abuses about and by CCN members.

2005 was a quiet year for the Policy Committee. There were fewer than half
a dozen complaints against users, the majority of incidents coming from
user computers compromised by viruses or other malware. In these cases the
users were notified of the problem and their Chebucto Plus access was
suspended until they could get their computers disinfected.
The Policy Committee lost a key member with the passing away of Norman De
Forest. Much has been made elsewhere about Norman's technical knowledge
and his knowledge of new scams being perpetrated against innocent
users, so I won't belabour the point. This committee is the richer for
having had Norman as a member and is now the poorer with his loss.
Housekeeping measures surrounding the introductions of several new
categories of membership last year were successfully implemented.
There was discussion of the setup of an amateur model agreement with the
idea of adding photographs of Chebucto users to the Chebucto website in an
effort to add some humanity to it. This was not concluded but little
remains for it to be put forward to the Board for approval.
Challenges for the Policy Committee this year are to recruit additional
members, to develop new policies for new service offerings, and to deal
with the ongoing collateral damage from an increasingly hostile Internet.
We will need your help to do this.
